The first event of the CAP, which is also known as Career Advancement Programme was conducted on 8 October 2009. The venue was BCS London office. According to the report, forty participants were presented for the event. Most of them were young IT professionals, graduate-level students, members of the board as well as speakers.
The speakers included some of the best professionals who had extensive experience for representing the career routes in engineering, IT – research, higher education, corporate development, management as well as in operations.
In the evening, each speaker gave a brief speech on the fundamental nature of their modus operandi, occupation, perks and challenges, key motivation, which will keep one in a career. The Q&A section, which followed saw different themes raised repeatedly. Some of the themes that were discussed in this event are mentioned below:
- Why would a person work for the same Company for several years?
- What are the main advantages as well as disadvantages of working for SMEs compared to a huge corporation, particularly in terms of the skills specialization?
- Importance of communication and interpersonal skills, in the career of an individual.
- What will be the future of the IT domain?
Few points, which emerged out were:
- Choose wit whom you can work carefully – variety of occupations obtainable, organizational culture, progression outlook.
- Interpersonal as well as communication skills is very important – it is very useful for the team-members, when managing others.
- Quick change is an enduring “occupational hazard” in the IT domain. Most of the job profiles, which people do today, did not exist before few years.
- Delivering the business value must be the top priority for all the IT professionals.
